• Keermont Cabernet grows in our Cottage Lane Vineyard on the mid-slopes of the Helderberg. This vineyard is situated on the crest of a ridge (320m above sea level) so has aspects ranging from East through North to West. It is very exposed resulting in small vines with low yields. This has allowed us to make a relatively fine grained Cabernet, but the clay soils translate to a wine with power, tension and fresh acidity. We blend in a couple of barrels of other varieties to add to the complexity of flavour and tannin structure. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 27 months maturing in seasoned French oak barriques (approximately 5% new) before being bottled by hand without filtration on 11 June 19. 8024 bottles and 100 magnums were produced. The Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 was bottle aged in our cellar for 9 months before release to ensure integration and improved drinkability on release.   TASTING NOTE Dark ruby red in colour, this is quite a serious vintage with a complex bouquet of ripe red berry fruit, cedar wood, and typical ‘fynbos’ flowers. The palate is full bodied, but gentle. Tannin structure is full and dense and coats the palate while the natural acidity keeps the ripe fruit in check. Savoury notes of tomato paste and cloves add character to the bright red strawberry and cassis flavours which linger into a long, tight finish. Drink 2020 – 2035.   VINTAGE REPORT 2017 was an excellent growing season on Keermont. Despite a drier than usual winter, we had strong growth in the vineyards during the spring time. This led to the formation of a good healthy crop which ripened evenly during the warm, dry summer. Harvest started fairly early, but was put on hold after a heavy rainfall in late January. This rejuvenated the vines and allowed for extended ripening which definitely raised the general quality. We recorded one of our largest and healthiest crops yet and grapes came in with great analysis and concentration.

    The Keermont Estate Reserve is our flagship red blend. With this blend we aim to bring to life the nuances of both the terroir at Keermont Vineyards and the particular vintage. All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Most of the vineyard parcels grow on deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous 'fynbos' vegetation. Our vineyards are planted on steep mid-slopes in the valley between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain ranges. Aspects vary from North East through North to West facing between 250 and 400 meters above sea level. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 24 months maturing in seasoned French oak barriques before being bottled by hand without filtration on 1 February 2016. 14229 bottles and 100 magnums were produced. The Keermont Estate Reserve 2014 was bottle aged in our cellar for 36 months before release to ensure integration and improved drinkability on release.

    TASTING NOTE

    Bright velvet red in the glass, this wine exudes complex aromas of ripe cherry, wild berries, and cloves. On the palate, the wine has a soft entry with an array of flavours: ripe red berries, crushed herbs and spice. There is a dense core which gives the wine good weight on the palate. A full chalky tannin structure comes to the fore affording the wine a long succulent finish with dark cherry notes. Drink 2019-2030.

    VINTAGE REPORT

    2014 was a great vintage at Keermont Vineyards. The season's winter was generally mild, but became cold and wet towards spring time. We experienced record rainfall and even snow on the mountains during August. This allowed for good vine growth during the spring, but also increased the mildew pressure and resulted in an unusually large insect population. Fortunately neither of these had a major impact on our crop. Our soils stayed moist through the growing season thanks to moderate temperatures and we hardly had to irrigate at all before harvest. A series of heat waves in early February jolted us into harvest action. The vines, which had been very nurtured by all the moisture, suddenly started to show some signs of stress and we needed to pick quite a few of the blocks over a short period. The favourable growing conditions contributed to a healthy crop of 152 tons for Keermont Vineyards. We processed 88 tons in our winery and sold 64.

    (375ml) The KEERMONT FLEURFONTEIN (‘flower fountain’) derives its name from a beautiful spring on the farm. The Sauvignon blanc vineyard from which the grapes are sourced for this wine lies just below this spring. Raisins are produced by pinching the stem of the grape bunches while they ripen on the vine using a pair of pliers. This pinching action stops the translocation of fluids into and out of the grapes, which stops the grapes from becoming over ripe and allows them to dry naturally during the warm summer. The raisins are harvested a few weeks later and the syrupy juice is squeezed from them with a hard pressing process. The grape syrup is fermented by indigenous yeast in Hungarian and French oak barrels. The wine is then left in these barrels to mature for 18 months. Total production of the 2019 vintage was just 3 barrels yielding 1697 bottles. All grapes used in producing this wine were grown on Keermont Vineyards. Processing, maturation, and bottling were carried out by hand in our cellar.

    TASTING NOTE

    Yellow gold in colour with copper tinge, the Fleurfontein 2019 exudes aromas of dried apricot, lime marmalade, and ripe orange rind with hints of hazelnut and vanilla. The palate is full and creamy with concentrated flavours of dried fruits and marzipan with a grassy freshness. A central core of acidity gives the wine a long, complex, and succulent finish with a slightly salty touch. Drink now through to 2031.

    VINTAGE REPORT

    The 2019 vintage could be regarded as a more challenging one at Keermont. The yields were very small, but the wines have turned out beautifully. Coming off the back of four very dry years in the Cape, winter rainfall was just slightly below average. Winter temperatures were moderate and perhaps not cold enough for the vines to break dormancy properly as we experienced quite uneven budding in spring. Spring started off cool and wet so the disease pressure was quite high with lots of Downey Mildew around. From that point onwards, the vintage conditions were quite good with some summer rains and warn temperatures without any major heat spikes. Harvest started on 30 January with some early white grapes. Harvesting was interrupted by 40mm of rain the following week which was very welcome, but slowed down the ripening. Grapes were harvested in a very healthy condition although sugar levels were generally low and acidity was difficult to gauge. Early signs indicate the 2019 wines will be soft and elegant with lots of flavour. The last red grapes were picked on 18 March after which the weather made a definite change to a more autumnal feel. We had to wait until 3 April for the last of the Fleurfontein grapes to dry out properly.

Most of the vineyard parcels grow on deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous vegetation. They lie between 250 and 400 metres above sea level at the top of the valley between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain ranges and have a variety of aspects from North East to West facing. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently with minimal intervention in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 27 months maturing in seasoned French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without fining or filtration on 11 June 2020. A total of 10847 bottles and 50 magnums were produced.

    TASTING NOTE

    The Keermont Merlot 2018 has a deep royal red colour. Beautiful dusty, ripe strawberry fruit nose with notes of dried herbs, cigar box and cinnamon. The palate is soft, but clean and elegant. The wine exudes flavours of ripe red fruit with undertones of orange rind and dried herbs. Soft chalky tannins and good natural acidity help to maintain a fresh elegance and a long, succulent dry finish. Best drinking: 2022-2032.

    VINTAGE REPORT

    Despite prevailing drought conditions, 2018 was a very good growing season on Keermont. We had a fairly cold winter although it was drier than usual. Spring arrived quite early and the warm weather ensured an even budburst. We had some good rain showers during the season which allowed for the vines to grow sufficiently. These factors led to the formation of a healthy crop which ripened evenly. We had very notable diurnal temperature variation during this season (warm days and cool nights) which is responsible for good tannin, colour, and flavour development. Harvest started at the beginning of February and ran very smoothly. We processed 87 tons (13 varieties) in the Keermont winery over the period of seven weeks.

  • KEERMONT SYRAH 2015 is a blend of three different Syrah vineyard sites growing on Keermont Vineyards: Steepside Syrah: Growing on a North facing slope in deep, red clay-rich soils; this vineyard generally produces powerful full bodied wines with rich, spicy flavours. Topside Syrah: An unirrigated west facing vineyard planted at 400m above sea level on rocky sandstone-based soil. Topside Syrah is usually a more aromatic wine with good structure and natural acid. Sweetwater Syrah: Situated in a rocky valley below the Fleurfontein spring, this is the coolest of the three Syrah sites and ripens the latest. Sweetwater Syrah is normally lighter and elegant in style with a herbal aroma. In certain vintages we may add a small percentage of Mourvèdre from the Steepside vineyard in order to bring another aspect to the tannin structure of the wine. All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 20 months maturing in seasoned 500 and 225 Litre French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration on 3 December 2015. We produced 16432 bottles and 102 magnums

    TASTING NOTE

    The Keermont Syrah 2015 has a bright strawberry red colour with a lighter hue. It has an enchanting bouquet of wild flowers, sweet cherries and an array of spices. The palate is elegant and focussed with a clean, linear acidity. It has an exciting cherry and plum flavour with notes of spice and earthiness. The tannins are vibrant and tight, and the wine has a long, succulent, herbal finish. Drink 2018-2028.

    VINTAGE REPORT

    A cold, wet winter (as experienced in this vintage) is a good thing for the vine. It goes into full dormancy and wakes up well rested and ready for the season ahead. This was apparent with very even budding and strong, early growth during spring. From that point onwards, we experienced a very dry season. Growing conditions, however, were ideal with warm days and cool nights. This variation in temperature generally leads to good flavour and colour development in the berries and as a result we had a small crop with great quality. We had our earliest harvest yet starting on 23 January and finishing on 3 March and took 70 tons of grapes into the winery.

  • Terrasse is our barrel fermented white blend which derives its name from the terraced vineyards leading up the mountains on the estate. We have six different white wine varieties planted on these terraces and every year we make up a unique blend. The base is Chenin blanc from three distinctive vineyards - our old vine Riverside block planted in 1971, the dryland bush vine Bobbejaan Wingerd (Baboon Vineyard), and the trellised Low Road vineyard. The other varieties add complexity and create a more complete wine. Chardonnay gives a little more weight on the palate, Sauvignon blanc brings fresh acidity, and the drop of Viognier gives this vintage a slight spicy, aromatic lift. All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. The farm is situated at the upper reaches of the Blaauwklippen Valley above Stellenbosch. Most of the vineyards grow in deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous mountain vegetation. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. White wines are fermented by indigenous yeast in seasoned French oak barrels and then spend a further 12 months maturing on the lees. Bottling is carried out by hand without filtration. 9055 bottles and 50 magnums were produced.

    TASTING NOTE

    Terrasse 2019 has a polished, light-yellow gold colour, with an explosive bouquet of lime, apple, pineapple, and peach with notes of vanilla, and butterscotch. The palate is rich, but fresh. A seemingly weightless entry comes quickly to life with ripe apricot, peach, and pear flavours complimented by cut grass, vanilla oak, and rich lees. This is followed by a lingering sweet-sour aftertaste.
