Keermont Syrah 2018

KEERMONT SYRAH is a blend of three different Syrah vineyard sites growing on Keermont Vineyards: Steepside Syrah: Growing on a North facing slope in deep, red clay-rich soils; this vineyard generally produces softer full bodied wines with rich, spicy flavours. Topside Syrah: An unirrigated west facing vineyard planted at 400m above sea level on rocky sandstone-based soil. Topside Syrah is usually an aromatic wine with a solid structure and high natural acid. Sweetwater Syrah: Situated in a rocky valley below the Fleurfontein spring, this is the coolest of the three Syrah sites and ripens the latest. Sweetwater Syrah is normally lighter and elegant in style with a herbal aroma. We add a small percentage of Mourvedre to this to bring some extra tannin structure and complexity. Vinification: All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Small parcels of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand, and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 20 months maturing in seasoned 500 and 225 litre French oak barrels before being bottled by hand on 27 November 2019. We produced 13074 bottles and 98 magnums.

TASTING NOTE

Keermont Syrah 2018 has a bright blood red colour with a lighter hue. The bouquet is enticing with strawberries and other red fruit and notes of sandal wood, tea leaf, cloves, and orange rind. The wine has a gentle entry onto the palate. It exudes vibrant flavours of cherry and raspberry, complimented by savoury spice, and a vanilla note. A soft, but tight tannin structure and good natural acidity keep the flavours focused into a tidy succulent finish. Drink 2023-2033.

VINTAGE REPORT

Despite prevailing drought conditions, 2018 was a very good growing season on Keermont. We had a fairly cold winter although it was drier than usual. Spring arrived quite early and the warm weather ensured an even budburst. We had some good rain showers during the season which allowed for the vines to grow sufficiently. These factors led to the formation of a healthy crop which ripened evenly. We had very notable diurnal temperature variation during this season (warm days and cool nights) which is responsible for good tannin, colour, and flavour development. Harvest started at the beginning of February and ran very smoothly. We processed 87 tons (13 varieties) in the Keermont winery over the period of seven weeks.

Keermont Terrasse 2023

Terrasse (pronounced ta-ras-ah), is our barrel fermented white blend which is named after the terraced vineyards leading up the Helderberg and Stellenbosch mountainsides on the estate. We have six different white wine varieties planted on these terraces and every year we make up a unique blend. It changes year to year, depending on what the vintage gives us. The core component is always Chenin blanc from our dryland bush vine Bobbejaan Wingerd (Baboon Vineyard), and the trellised Low Road vineyard. Chardonnay gives the blend some weight on the palate, Sauvignon blanc from our dryland vineyard ‘Uitkyk’ (planted in 1988) brings fresh acidity, and the drops of Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier give a slight spicy, aromatic lift. Small batches of grapes are selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. Terrasse is fermented by indigenous yeast in seasoned French oak barrels and then spends a further 12 months maturing on the lees. Bottling is carried out by hand with minimal fining or filtration.

TASTING NOTE

The Terrasse 2023 has a light green gold colour. The nose is inviting with notes of spring flowers, ripe apricots and citrus, and hints of barley. The palate is soft and luscious at first, then opens up with lovely fresh acidity and an array of flavours like apricot, peach and quince complimented by richer, spicier and savoury fruit. This follows into a lingering aftertaste with a light phenolic grip. A thin line of salty acidity gives the wine a succulent finish. Drink 2024-2035.

VINTAGE REPORT

The 2023 vintage will be remembered as one of the wettest growing seasons that we have had at Keermont. We had a nice cold and wet winter which set the vines on a good course. Spring saw warm conditions with regular rain, ideal for the development of the vine shoots and bunches. The season seemed to be drying out in November and the growth slowed down dramatically. In December we had a wave of cold fronts bringing in more rain and the vineyards started growing again giving the vineyard team lots of canopy work to do to prepare for harvest. Despite all the rain, we were able to stay on top of our schedule and establish healthy crops of grapes on the vines. Harvest started at the end of January, a fairly normal time for us to start picking. Regular showers of rain during harvest meant that we needed to stop and start to give the vineyards a chance to dry out. Harvest lasted about seven weeks and we processed 89 tons in the winery. The grapes were healthy and the young wines are tasting beautiful with great elegance.

Companion Red 2021

Cabernet Sauvignon 54%; Petit Verdot 39%; Syrah 5%; Cabernet Franc 2% The Keermont Companion Red is a blend of a handful of barrels that were left over after we had made up our Keermont wines for 2021. The components are in no way inferior to the components of the Keermont range, we simply had more barrels of them than were required. Interestingly, the combination has resulted in a very complete, balanced, and delicious wine.
VINIFICATION
All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Most of the vineyard parcels grow on deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous ‘fynbos’ vegetation. Our vineyards are planted on steep mid-slopes high up in the valley between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain ranges. Aspects vary from North East through North to West facing between 250 and 400 meters above sea level. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 22 months maturing in seasoned French oak barriques before being bottled by hand without filtration on 27/4/23. 1385 bottles were produced.
TASTING NOTE
Dark ruby red in colour, this vintage has a bouquet of red berry fruit, cassis, dustiness, and a hint of black pepper. The pallet is fine and structured. The tannins are firm, while the natural acidity keeps the ripe fruit in check. Notes of red fruit, cocoa and cloves linger into a long focussed finish. Best drinking:2026-2030.

Weather conditions were very favourable beginning with a good wet winter and spring through a very moderate growing season to a late cool and dry harvest. These factors, combined with a lot of hard work in the vineyards led to the development of a healthy, evenly ripened crop. Although our yields per hectare were not particularly high, the quality was very exciting. Grapes came in looking and tasting great with very good acidity and sugar levels. Picking and processing ran really smoothly thanks to lessons learned in previous vintages as well as a massive effort from the picking and winery teams. The Keermont winery crushed a total of 80 tons all sourced from our own vineyards.

The Companion White 2022 is a barrel fermented white blend made up of components originally destined for the Keermont Terrasse. In 2022, we had a little bit too much Roussanne and Marsanne for the Terrasse blend, so mixed this with a barrel of Chenin to make up the Companion White.
Vinification
All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. The farm is situated at the upper reaches of the Blaauwklippen Valley above Stellenbosch. Most of the vineyards grow in deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous mountain vegetation. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. White wines are fermented by indigenous yeast in seasoned French oak barrels and then spend a further 12 months maturing on the lees.
Tasting Notes
A polished light-yellow gold colour, this wine has a complex bouquet of prominent citrus and stone fruit with notes of vanilla, freshly green cut apple, Frangipane flowers. The wine has a soft juicy palate with lovely texture and a fresh core. Subtle fruit flavours of peach, litchi and apricot are complimented by hints of sweet spice and vanilla. A limey acidity holds the wine together into a lingering, succulent finish. Best drinking window 2025-2032.

Keermont Amphitheatre 2018

Keermont Vineyards is a specialist wine estate set in the naturally-formed amphitheatre between the Helderberg and Stellenbosch Mountain ranges. Selecting the best fruit from several vineyard sites on the farm, we create a blend each year which is distinctive, unique, and portrays the character of our superb terroir. This blend is Keermont Amphitheatre. All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. The vineyards grow on deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite and are surrounded by indigenous mountain ‘fynbos’ vegetation. Vineyard aspects vary from Northeast through North to West facing and they lie between 250 and 400 meters above sea level. This variety of slopes gives us complexity in our vineyards resulting in complexity in our wines. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 29 months maturing in seasoned French oak barriques (first, second, third fill) before being bottled by hand without filtration on 6 August 2020. 3685 bottles and 100 magnums were produced. The Keermont Amphitheatre 2018 lay in bottle in our cellar for 5 years before release to ensure integration and maturity.

TASTING NOTE

Bright ruby red in the glass, the Keermont Amphitheatre 2018 opens with rich ripe fruit complimented by hints of baked pudding, vanilla, cloves and potpourri. The palate is luxurious and layered. Vibrant red fruit flavours of strawberries and cherries with typical herbal notes with hints if cured meat and sandal wood. Layers of flavour and tannin linger into a long, balanced savoury finish. Drink 2025-2037.

Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon grows in our Cottage Lane vineyard on the mid-slopes of the Helderberg Mountain. This vineyard is situated on the crest of a ridge at 320m above sea level. It has aspects ranging from East through North to West and is very exposed, resulting in small, tight bunches and low yields. This has allowed us to make a relatively fine-grained Cabernet, while the clay soils translate to a wine with power, tension and fresh acidity. We blend in a couple of barrels of other varieties to add to the complexity of flavour and tannin structure. All grapes used in producing our wines are grown on Keermont Vineyards. Most of the vineyard parcels grow on deep red clay rich soil derived from sandstone and granite. The blocks are surrounded by indigenous fynbos vegetation. Our vineyards are planted on steep mid-slopes high up in the valley between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountain ranges, between 250 and 400 meters above sea level. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently and naturally in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 21 months maturing in seasoned French oak barriques before being bottled by hand on 14 December 2022. The Keermont Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 was bottle aged in our cellar for 20 months before release to ensure integration and improved rinkability. 14 286 bottles and 100 magnums were produced. TASTING NOTE Dark ruby red in colour, this vintage has a vibrant bouquet of ripe red berry fruit, cassis, dustiness, and a hint of fresh herbs. The palate is fine and structured. The tannins are firm, while the natural acidity keeps the ripe fruit in check. Savoury notes of cocoa and cloves add character to the bright red strawberry and mulberry flavours which linger into a long-focussed finish. Best drinking:2026-2036. Keermont Merlot 2021

Our two Merlot vineyards are High Road with heavier clay and more rocky soils (altitude 330m) and Homestead with lighter loamy soil (altitude 260m). The wines from High Road are generally more dense and concentrated and from Homestead slightly lighter and more elegant. In 2021, the yields on High Road Merlot were very low, so it only makes up 15% of this year’s blend. Small batches of grapes are specifically selected according to ripeness, harvested by hand and vinified separately. This process is carried out gently with minimal intervention in open top fermenters using traditional methods only. This wine spent 20 months maturing in seasoned French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without fining and only light filtration on 25 November 2022. A total of 10 779 bottles and 100 magnums were produced.

TASTING NOTE

The Keermont Merlot 2021 has a vibrant venetian red colour. Enticing spicy red fruit on the nose with hints of cinnamon, dried herbs, dust and mixed berries. Classical elegant, fruitful palate with dark plums, cherries and vanilla notes. Fine tannins and fresh acidity hold the wine into a long savoury finish. Best drinking: 2024-2035.

Keermont Fleurfontein 2024

(375ml) The KEERMONT FLEURFONTEIN (‘flower fountain’) derives its name from a beautiful spring on the farm. The Sauvignon blanc vineyard from which grapes are sourced for this wine lies just below this spring. We use a distinctive technique to produce raisins in the vineyard which give the Fleurfontein its concentration and sweetness. Raisins are produced by using a pair of pliers to pinch the stem of the bunches while they ripen on the vine. This pinching action stops the translocation of fluids into and out of the grapes, which then stops them from becoming over ripe. We do this when the grapes are at optimal ripeness in order to concentrate the juice with the perfect sugar to acid balance. The grapes dry out naturally during the warm summer and are harvested a few weeks later. The syrupy juice is squeezed from them with a hard pressing process. This is slowly fermented by indigenous yeast in Hungarian and French oak barrels and then matures in these barrels for about 15 months. Total production for this bottling was seven barrels yielding 3305 bottles. All grapes used in producing this wine were grown on Keermont Vineyards. Processing, maturation, and bottling were carried out by hand in our cellar.
TASTING NOTE
Yellow gold in colour, the Fleurfontein 2024 exudes aromas of dried apricot, litchi, and pine apple with hints of almond, vanilla and sweet spice. The palate is full and creamy with concentrated flavours of dried fruit, honey vanilla biscuit and a touch of curry spice. A central core of acidity gives the wine a long, complex, salted caramel finish. Drink now through to 2035.
VINTAGE REPORT
2024 will be remembered as a good vintage on Keermont, although yields were generally very low resulting in a small crop. We had a very cold and wet winter resulting in substantial flooding in the Cape. Fortunately, we didn’t sustain too much damage and the conditions were actually very beneficial to the vineyards. The cool, wet weather led to slow budding. The young shoots are suspectable to attack over this period and damage can be caused by snails, Duiker (small buck), and baboons. Spring warmed up and the vines started to grow strongly. We had good rain showers during the early season to keep the vineyards going, although may have affected flowering leading to lighter bunches. The middle of the season dried up and, from Christmas onwards, we experience several heatwaves. This dried the vineyards out quickly and led to some sunburn on exposed bunches. The light crop ripened quickly under the warm conditions and we started harvesting early (23 January). We quickly progressed through the different varieties and by the end of February, all of the grapes had been harvested except for the dried grapes for Fleurfontein. Yields were down by about 30% on average, but despite fairly tough conditions in the late season, the vineyards looked healthy and balanced throughout the vintage. The grapes tasted amazing and had good analysis and I expect that we are going to have some beautifully intense wines.

Pondokrug Cabernet Franc 2019

Pondokrug - a ridge (rug) deriving its name from a shepherds hut (Pondok). High up on the West facing slopes of the Stellenbosch Mountain, this is a 1.8Ha parcel of Cabernet Franc planted in 2006. At an elevation of 380m above sea level and surrounded by mountain ‘fynbos’ vegetation, this block is exposed to many natural elements resulting in very low yields. The soil on Pondokrug is red granitic loam with a high clay content which sustains the vines during the summer months. These factors allow us to produce an intense wine with unique flavours and a solid tannin structure. All grapes used in producing this wine are grown on two small terraces of Pondokrug. These small parcels of grapes were specifically selected, harvested by hand and vinified separately. Fermentation was carried out by yeast which occur naturally on the grape skins and in the winery. Our red wines spend three to four weeks fermenting and macerating on the skins in small open top tanks with one or two gentle ‘punch-downs’ performed per day. This wine spent 20 months maturing in seasoned 225 litre French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration. 1475 bottles and 50 Magnums were produced.
TASTING NOTE
The Pondokrug Cabernet Franc 2019 is bright blood red in colour. The nose is a deep, complex and intriguing mix of bright red cherry fruit, cloves, and some typical bell pepper character. The palate explodes with ripe cherry and black current flavours with hints of dried herbs. The tight chalky tannins balance the big fruit palate hold the wine into a long, succulent and dry finish. Drink 2025-2036.

The 2019 vintage was quite a challenging one at Keermont. The yields were very small, but the wines have turned out beautifully. Coming off the back of four very dry years in the Cape, the vines were taking a bit strain. Winter rainfall was just slightly below average. Winter temperatures were moderate and perhaps not cold enough for the vines to break dormancy properly as we experienced quite uneven budding in spring. Spring started off cool and wet so the vines grew well, although the disease pressure was quite high. From that point onwards, the vintage conditions were good with some summer rains and warm temperatures without any major heat spikes. Harvest started on 30 January, but was interrupted by 40mm of rain the following week. This pepped the vines up for the final ripening of the grapes. Grapes were harvested in a very healthy condition although sugar levels were generally lower and acidity varied.

Steepside Syrah 2019

Planted in 2005 on the steep mid-slopes of the Helderberg Mountain range, the Steepside Syrah vineyard sits at an elevation of 300m. Vines grow in red clay loam soils with high levels of iron and quartzite originating from the peaks above. The combination of these deep granitic soils and the intensity of the sunshine on the North facing ridge allows the vineyard to produce wines with power and structure, while the spicy herbal aromatics can be attributed to the elevation and the pristine fynbos flora that surround it. All grapes used in producing this wine come from our Steepside 2 Syrah block (1.3Ha). A small parcel of grapes was specifically selected, harvested by hand and vinified separately. Fermentation was carried out by yeast which occur naturally on the grape skins and in the winery. Our red wines spend three to four weeks fermenting and macerating on the skins in small open top tanks with one or two gentle ‘punch-downs’ performed per day. This wine spent 20 months maturing in two seasoned 225L and one 500L French oak barrels before being bottled by hand and only 1148 bottles and 50 magnums were produced.
TASTING NOTE
Lighter, bright red in colour the Steepside Syrah has expressive sweet red fruit character on the nose with hints of cloves and fynbos. The entry onto the palate is soft and silky with a layered tannin structure coming to the fore. Savoury plum and strawberry fruit flavours are contrasted by a hint of herbs and bell pepper. The delicate flavours and tannin linger into a succulent dry finish. Suggested drinking window 2025-2035

Riverside Chenin Blanc 2021

Planted in 1971, Riverside Chenin blanc is the oldest vineyard on Keermont and one of the oldest blocks on Chenin blanc in Stellenbosch. Soils on the banks of the Blaauwklippen River, in which the vines are planted, vary from sandy alluvial plains with river stone to red clay loam as one moves away from the river. This patchy old vineyard, at an elevation of 250m, delivers very low yields of incredible quality fruit year in and year out. Like the old vines from which it is made, this wine has great complexity and character with quiet intensity. Proud member of the Old Vine Project (www.oldvineproject.co.za). The yield from the Riverside Chenin blanc vineyard (2.14 HA) is so low that every bunch is used to make this wine. The vineyard is hand-picked in small sections according to where the grapes are perfectly ripe. The fruit is normally golden yellow in colour and peppered with delicious raisins. The grapes are basket-pressed straight to the barrels where the juice will ferment. Fermentation is carried out by yeast which occurs naturally on the grape skins and in the winery. This wine was fermented and then spent a further 11 months maturing on the lees in three seasoned 500L French oak barrels. Bottling was carried out by hand without filtration and only 1898 bottles and 50 magnums of this wine were produced.
TASTING NOTE
Lovely faint lime hue. The aromas are fresh with delicate floral notes of lily and salted cashew and a soft indication of oak. Classic old vine Chenin blanc. Floral notes give way to youthful fruit aromas of naartjie or mandarin zest and fresh white pear. Fruit is lightly seasoned with green herb and white pepper undertones. The palate is crisp and dry up front, with racy acidity and a long finish. White fruit notes follow through from the nose, and pear and granny smith apple flavours are most evident. After some time in the glass, it shows cumin and ginger spice with characteristic salinity and light texture on the finish.
VINTAGE REPORT
2021 will be remembered as an excellent vintage at Keermont. Weather conditions were very favourable beginning with a good wet winter and spring through a very moderate growing season to a late cool and dry harvest. These factors, combined with a lot of hard work in the vineyards led to the development of a healthy, evenly ripened crop. Although our yields per hectare were not particularly high, the quality was very exciting. Grapes came in looking and tasting great with very good acidity and sugar levels. Picking and processing ran really smoothly thanks to lessons learned in previous vintages as well as a massive effort from the picking and winery teams. The Keermont winery crushed a total of 80 tons all sourced from our own vineyards.

Topside Syrah . . . 2019

The Topside Syrah vineyard is situated high up on the West facing midslopes of the Stellenbosch Mountain range (Elevation 350m). It was planted in 2006 on rocky soils consisting of clay shale, sandstone, and granite, weathered from the peaks above. Vines are unirrigated, trellised and run with the contour in a North South direction. The elevation, soil and aspect all contribute to spicy character, racy acidity, and fine-grained tannin structure of this wine. The West facing position on the mountain means that the vineyard only receives direct sunlight later in the morning than a lot of the other vineyards. The soil is therefore cool in the early morning, warming up with the later afternoon sun. Topside vineyard sits on a terrace completely surrounded by pristine mountain fynbos and proteas, with views west to Table Mountain that are simply breathe taking. All grapes used in producing this wine come from our Topside vineyard (1.7Ha). A small parcel of grapes was specifically selected, harvested by hand and vinified separately. Fermentation was carried out by yeast which occur naturally on the grape skins and in the winery. Our red wines spend three to four weeks fermenting and macerating on the skins in small open top tanks with one or two gentle ‘punch-downs’ performed per day. After fermentation, this wine spent 20 months maturing in seasoned 500 litre French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration. Only 1867 bottles and 50 magnums were produced.
TASTING NOTE
Deep ruby red in colour, the Topside Syrah 2019 has Dark-Sweet cherries and prunes on the nose with dried herbs and sandalwood. Soft and gentle on entry, the palate is dense and firm with an earthy dryness. Ripe red fruit fills the mouth with hints of wild herbs and pepper. The tannins are firm, but supple focussing the wine into a long tight dark fruited finish. Suggested drinking window: 2025-2035
